Eileen Cohen is a quilter and fiber artist who creates decorative
wall hangings beyond the traditional. Her work has evolved for over 20
years to visualize more and more of her inner voice, reflecting a
loosening of boundaries, such as is found in asymmetrical designs, raw edges and hanging threads. Her pieces are often inspired by color or even one particular
piece of fabric. Sometimes a piece is created completely in her mind's eye first, at other times the piece grows out of simple fabric play to a
point at which it feels good. Her work is often whimsical, and may
include "surprises" like clothing labels and leftover toys, jewelry and
ephemera from her kids' younger life, that require "reading" the quilt
to discover. She likes to comb through thrift shops to find buttons and
unusual fabrics, and offers herself as a creative home for anyone's
mate-less earrings.
Eileen's work comes in many sizes, the smallest of which are "postcard"
quilts which come with an envelope and space on the back for a quick
message (any pen will do as these are not meant to be washed-Eileen uses
Sharpies) like "happy birthday", "congrats"," miss you", etc. They are
ready to hang, so in essence, it's the card that keeps on giving! |
