When you put on a piece of jewelry crafted by Donald MacLachlan it is sometimes difficult to take it off. The careful and loving craftsmanship combined with the intuitive choice of gemstones for their healing energies make each piece truly unique.
Donald was brought up on the North Shore of Massachusetts. He was classically educated at Bates College in Maine and then at Tufts Dental School in Boston where he received his doctoral degree in dentistry. His successful ten-year practice in Boston helped to refine the technical skills, which are evident in his work.
He left his practice in 1981 to follow his life long dream of becoming an artist. He then attended the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston where he chose to study jewelry as wearable art. His designs and choice of materials are inspired by the natural beauty of the ocean and of the mountains of New England.
The combination of refined detail and exquisite gemstones with the random patterns of reticulation and woven wires are the signature of Donald's work.
He has been featured in some of the finest jewelry galleries in the United States including Aaron Faber Gallery in New York, The Artful Hand and Quadrum Galleries in Boston, Fairchild and Company in Santa Fe, and Haephestus Gallery in Palm Springs. His work may currently be seen at the Don Muller Gallery in Northampton, Massachusetts and at the Clever Hand Gallery in Wellesley.
Donald still lives near the ocean in Massachusetts where in addition to creating custom designed healing jewelry he has recently begun to work acrylic paints on canvas. He lives with his life partner, Stephen and their two Shi Tzus, Lucy and Ricky.
