Robyn’s
beautiful pottery reflects her love of Italian landscapes, the
richness of red terra cotta clay, and the calming, warm colors
of the earth and sun. Her pottery is also rooted in her deep appreciation
of people and the history of the past. “What I love most
about working in clay is that it connects me to the people of cultures
around the world who have been making pots since the beginning
of preparing and serving food,” she says.
Originally from the Holliston, Massachusetts area, Robyn began
studying art at the Portland School of Art in Maine in 1986, intending
to major in painting. While taking a pottery course as an elective
she knew immediately that she would be a potter. In her second
year of school, she had the opportunity to continue her studies
in Florence, Italy.
It was there that she took classes in art history,
ceramics and the Italian language at the Studio Art Center International. She
also worked as a ceramic studio assistant and as a teacher of ceramic handbuilding
for children, ages 5-10. After two years in the heart of Florence, she returned
to Portland filled with inspiration and ready to finish her BFA in Ceramics,
which she did in 1990.
“My time in Italy had a profound effect on my career as a young artist
as well as it did for my personal journey” says Robyn. While there, she
became intrigued with terra cotta clay. “It is found everywhere in Europe,” she
says, “from roof tops and walkways, to wine vessels, urns and plates.” She
adds, “I am drawn to the red of the fired clay; therefore, I incorporate
the clay's true color in the design of many pieces. My glazes are brushed, dipped,
sprayed, and painted to make each piece one-of-a-kind.” Robyn’s pieces
are all functional, lead free, and dishwater-safe. She concludes, “creating
inviting dinner ware fit for the company of good food, family and
friends is something I truly enjoy!
